Mental health service professionals have long been advised and in some cases required to seek supervision of or consultation about their work by a third party professional. Often the complicated and emotionally charged nature of the topics and situations with which they are dealing require a delicate balance between personal involvement and professional detachment. Sometimes one’s own psychological and, in the case of clergy, spiritual tender points get triggered. A supervisor can help sort that out. An objective, second set of eyes on a situation can often provide valuable insights. Such supervision can be done individually as the need arises or it can be done in a regularly scheduled group as an on-going opportunity for personal and professional growth.
